Great performance and characterisation in a moving story of a father and daughter coping against the backdrop of ecological disaster

Wonderful film of a young girl and her volatile, but loving father, who live in a free spirited community in Southern Louisiana.  Set against an ecological disaster, the community lose almost everything as the waters rise, never to fall again.

The two central characters are both completely new to acting, not that you’d know it, as they give wholly convincing performances.  Eight year old Quevenzhane Wallis who plays Hushpuppy, is the youngest ever contender for Best Actress Oscar.

Dwight Henry,  also conveys a convincing portrait of an angry and directionless father, but who still cares deeply for his daughter.

The film itself is nominated in Best Picture category, which is an impressive achievement in itself for a first picture
